Professor Hofacre of the Southern Poultry Research Group is Presenting Orego-Stim and pHorce Trial Results at IPSF.

Professor Charles Hofacre DVM, MAM, PhD, President of the Southern Poultry Research Group, is presenting at the 2023 International Poultry Scientific Forum in Georgia, USA. The work, titled “Prevention and control of necrotic enteritis with an essential oil (Orego-Stim) and an organic acid (pHorce)”, will be presented at the poster session at the event on the 23rd – 24th January.

Necrotic enteritis (NE) is a common bacterial poultry disease, affecting approximately 40% of commercial broiler flocks and costs the industry approximately $6 billion annually. Clinical outbreaks can cause mortality rates of up to 50%, whereas the subclinical form can lead to negative effects on growth rate and feed efficiency due to intestinal damage and impairment of nutrient absorption.

The disease is commonly seen in broilers from around 14-28 days and is caused by the over-proliferation of Clostridium perfringens and production of toxins and coccidia infection is a major predisposing factor.

The trial work being presented on poster P255 reports the results of feeding Anpario’s Orego-Stim Powder and pHorce on broiler performance during a mild NE challenge.

Professor Hofacre has a BS in Agriculture, an MS in Poultry Science and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. He also has a Master of Avian Medicine and PhD in Veterinary Medical Microbiology from The University of Georgia.
