Coccidiosis in Broilers
Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the Eimeria species. It is an economically significant disease of broilers and other major livestock species, estimated to cost the broiler industry alone €13.5 billion per year (Blake, 2020, FAO, 2022). Coccidiosis is ubiquitous and so is present in every poultry house, and all commercial poultry will at some stage contract coccidiosis.
Eimeria cause damage to the intestinal wall resulting in inability to absorb nutrients effectively whilst compromising the barrier against bacterial pathogens. Damage to the intestinal barrier results in decreased performance, loss of appetite, poor uniformity, poor feathering, bloody diarrhoea, and increased mortality (Hendrix, 2021). Intestinal damage also enables Clostridium perfringens to proliferate causing necrotic enteritis. The most direct link is seen between C. perfringens and coccidiosis with E. maxima being the leading cause (Mathis, 2015).
The goal of any coccidiosis management programme is to control the severity of coccidiosis and to attempt to regulate when the primary damage will occur.
Practical methods of control cannot prevent all cases of coccidiosis infection, and so rely on conventional pharmaceutical methods of control such as vaccination and anticoccidials. Over recent years, concern has been expressed regarding the long-term effectiveness of conventional methods of coccidiosis control, meaning natural alternatives have gained interest.

What is Orego-Stim®?
Orego-Stim is a high quality eubiotic containing an exclusive source of 100% natural oregano essential oil (OEO), with a unique and consistent fingerprint of active components produced to the highest quality standards. Natural OEO comprises of over 100 active compounds, most of which are phenolic compounds with varying antioxidant, antimicrobial and antifungal activity.
A Natural Solution to Support Coccidiosis Management
The effect of all constituents of natural OEO work together to help support coccidiosis management. Orego-Stim has been extensively researched to demonstrate it can help support animal performance during a coccidiosis challenge. OEO has various scientifically proven modes of action supporting coccidiosis management:

Direct anticoccidial effects

Gut healing and repair

Antibacterial effects

Immune support and anti-inflammatory responses

Antioxidant effects

Liver and kidney function
Over 25 years of research has shown Orego-Stim naturally supports broilers during coccidiosis challenge:

Feed efficiency

Bodyweight gain

Liveability

EPEF

Coccidiosis lesion scores

Oocyst counts
Furthermore, Orego-Stim has been shown not to interfere with anticoccidial vaccine immunity. Orego-Stim also allows broilers to build up natural immunity against coccidiosis by allowing for coccidia recycling in litter.
