SUMMARY
  • Acid products can added to raw materials and finished feed as a bacterial decontaminating agent to improve feed hygiene and as a eubiotic to help maintain a healthy gut flora within the animal
  • Acids in their concentrated form can be corrosive and care should always be taken when handling them. Correct PPE must always be worn
  • pHorce, Salkil, Salgard, Genex, all contain organic acids.

WHAT DOES THE TERM CORROSIVE MEAN?

Within the industry there are several definitions for the term corrosive. These are noted below:

  • ADR corrosive – This relates to the transportation of goods which are considered corrosive, i.e considered able to cause damage to the skin or metal. This will be noted on the pallet label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
  • CLP corrosive – This relates to manual handling of products. For a product to be labelled as corrosive under CLP, it would contain a certain level of a corrosive ingredient. This detail will be noted on the product label and SDS.
  • Anpario products can be classified as ADR and/or CLP corrosive, please always consult the product documentation.

USE OF ACIDS WITHIN THE FEED MILL
  • Acid products can be added to any stage of the milling process such as raw materials at intake, within the feed mixer or to finished feed.
  • To minimise any corrosion concerns all feed mill equipment coming in contact with acid products should be stainless steel or another acid resistant material.
  • If adding acid products to the mixer these should be added last to minimise over-processing and ensure full efficacy in the animal.

CLEAN DOWN PROCEDURES
  • If mill cleaning or flushing is performed with a high inclusion mix of acids for biosecurity purposes, ensure that the product is not left in direct contact with the feed mill longer than advised by your Anpario representative.
  • Once the flush has been completed Anpario would recommend a further flush of 100% wheat bran (or other suitable carrier) to ensure that there is minimal residue left in the feed mill.
